13 States With Republican Governors Opt Out of Summer Food Program for Kids, Idaho Capital Sun, June 29, 2024 Idaho and Utah are among 13 GOP-led states that have declined to participate in the new Summer EBT Program in the summer of 2024. The program will provide eligible families with $120 in federally funded grocery benefits for each school-age child who is eligible for free or reduced-price school meals. Kelsey Boone, senior child nutrition policy analyst at FRAC, says, “For most states, the trade-off ends up being that for all that’s being spent on administrative costs, the benefits of the program far outweighs it. I think there will be a lot of pushback and a lot of people reaching out to their state agencies and their state governors’ offices to ask them to run the program in 2025, and that will be very powerful.”

New Summer EBT Program Will Help Feed 900K Michigan Children, WNEM-TV (Bay City, MI), July 3, 2024 Summer EBT benefits are set to be distributed starting Friday, July 19, in Michigan, where an estimated 900,000 children are expected to benefit from the program. Families in the state with pre-existing EBT cards will receive a one-time payment of $120 per eligible child, while those without EBT cards will be sent a pre-loaded card in the mail.

SUN Bucks Aims to Combat ‘Summer Hunger’ Kids Face When School’s Out, Maryland Matters, July 1, 2024 In the summer, children from households with low incomes lose access to the school meals they rely on during the school year. “Summer hunger is a problem … and we need to do something,” says LaMonika Jones, interim president of Maryland Hunger Solutions. “We want to do everything we can to maximize the reach of meals while kids are out over the summer.” A new, permanent federal program known as Summer EBT is helping to bridge the summer hunger gap — by providing food assistance benefits to eligible families in Maryland this summer.
