on August 31, 2022 by NPR and it features seven recommendations from food policy leaders on how to improve the U.S. diet and health. The recommendations are:

  • Expand access to healthy food by increasing SNAP benefits, creating incentives for buying fruits and vegetables, and supporting local food systems.
  • Invest in nutrition education by funding programs that teach cooking skills, nutrition literacy, and food culture.
  • Regulate junk food marketing by limiting the exposure of children to unhealthy food ads, imposing taxes on sugary drinks, and requiring clear nutrition labels.
  • Support innovation in food production by encouraging plant-based alternatives, reducing food waste, and promoting regenerative agriculture.
  • Address the root causes of hunger and malnutrition by tackling poverty, inequality, and systemic racism that affect food access and health outcomes.
  • Strengthen public health infrastructure by enhancing surveillance, research, and evaluation of diet-related diseases and interventions.
  • Engage diverse stakeholders by creating coalitions, partnerships, and networks that involve multiple sectors and communities in food policy decisions.
